Darneil Reeves of Lakewood pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in connection with the 2015 death, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.

When Reeves is sentenced on Feb. 11, 2022, the state is recommending a sentence of 20 years in state prison, Billhimer said Wednesday.

On June 22, 2015, off-duty Lakewood police officers witnessed a motor vehicle crash into a telephone pole at the intersection of John Street and River Avenue in Lakewood, the prosecutor said.

As officers approached the vehicle, Hassan Parker, 32, of South Toms River, exited the vehicle and said that he had been stabbed. In the ambulance, Parker alleged named Reeves as his assailant, Billhimer said.

Parker was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, he said.

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, Lakewood Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, determined that Reeves stabbed Parker in the chest in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Center Street, Billhimer said. Parker then drove away and crashed into the telephone pole, he said.

On June 30, 2015, Reeves surrendered to the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force with his attorney, and has been held in the Ocean County Jail ever since.
